Silicon nanophotonics is emerging as an important platform for a variety of applications. While several Si photonic devices have been fabricated the main problem stands with an efficient silicon light source. In this manuscript we briefly review recent advances in the field focusing, as an example, to two main cases: silicon nanowires and photonic nanocavities.
